Leadership Judgement Indicator
PURPOSE
The
LJI measures accuracy of judgement when dealing with
leadership decisions.
It is designed to help any person in a formal or informal
position of influence to become more effective and so
more successful in their leadership decision making.

DESCRIPTION
The Leadership Judgement Indicator (LJI) was specifically created to measure the level of ‘wisdom’ that the respondent uses in decision-making.
Composed from 16 different decision-making scenarios, it requires the respondent to rate the appropriateness of various courses of action in responding to each challenge.
The scenarios have been crafted from the principles underlying leadership theory and there is a single best fit way to react to each scenario. The most effective response is always that which achieves the desired business result whilst ensuring the continued motivation and loyalty of the team. All other response categories have various degrees of closeness of fit to the most effective response and are scored accordingly.
THE UNIQUENESS OF THE LJI
The advantage of the measurement approach used by LJI is that the respondent is being asked to actually demonstrate their level of leadership wisdom through the questionnaire. The responses are scored for correctness in terms of achieving desirable business outcomes in specific situations.
LJI is in stark contrast to traditional assessment tools relating to behavioural style where respondents are asked to describe their typical ways of behaving (with a view to an assessment of how the individual is likely to behave most of the time). Such self-report approaches work well when the objective is to gain insight about an individual's self-concept and it is certainly the case that people tend to behave in ways that are consistent with their self-concept.
Whilst these more traditional tools support a prediction of how people are likely to behave when they are being themselves, they don't provide any insight about how effectively individuals perform in situations that, for the sake of a desirable business result, require them to be less like themselves. This is a different piece of the jigsaw of human behaviour and it is specifically addressed by the LJI.
The scenario-based approach adopted by LJI goes beyond the measurement of the typical or preferred style of a respondent - it sets out to assess how well that individual understands the importance of sometimes behaving against their preferred style.
RELIABILITY
Internal consistency reliability for the LJI was calculated at .68. All the scenarios were effective with total item correlations ranging from .11 to .56 with a median correlation .26.
