Ravens Progressive Matrices
PURPOSE
The Ravens Progressive Matrices are designed to assess a person's intellectual and reasoning ability and the ability to make sense of complex data, to draw meaning out of ambiguity and to perceive and think clearly.

DESCRIPTION
Each of the problems within both the Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) and the Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) is presented in the form of a sequence of symbolic figures. The subject is required to understand the nature of the relationships within each sequence and select one figure which completes each sequence. By so doing, the subject demonstrates the degree to which a systematic method of reasoning has been developed.
The term "Progressive" within the test's name refers to the fact that the problems within each of the test variants become progressively more difficult.
Standard Progressive Matrices
If timed (40 minutes) the test is a measure of intellectual efficiency, if untimed, it provides a measure of intellectual capacity. The test consists of 60 problems divided into five sets of 12. In each set the first problem is self evident, the others becoming progressively more difficult.
The Classic version is the one most commonly used. Parallel is designed for those situations in which there is a risk that respondents may be aware of, or have memorised, the answers to the Classic version.
The new Plus version is designed to increase the test's discriminative power at the top end of the ability scale.
Advanced Progressive Matrices
There is a version for use within the educational sector and another for use within the occupational sector. Each version consists of two booklets containing similar non-verbal items. Set 1 contains 12 problems which act as a practice for Set 2, which consists of 36 items arranged in order of difficulty.
